A Photo Showing a Workshop Attendee How To Print

Workshops

When I set out to create a studio space I always had the community in mind. I love teaching and sharing information. There are no secrets. Everyone has learned from someone and the only way we keep the craft alive is to teach it to others. I am ready to help you expand that hobby skillset, expand into a side-hustle or even start you on the path to a new career.

Don't Stop Believing

Maybe you did some screen printing in college and want to see what has changed (hint... not much) or you were always curious how "shirts were made." You might be looking to start up a side-hustle or maybe even make a career move. Start your journey with either option below. You do not have to take the Screen Print Starter Class to take the Pro. It is more of a low barrier of entry. Great to see if it is something you want to explore more or just to add a notch to your hobbyist or crafting belt.

TheNext Steps to Print Mastery

Ok, You are ready to take the next step. If you have taken the Screen Print Pro class you are ready to take the newest classes at the studio. Screen Print Multi-Color and Screen Print Light on Dark. These classes are with less people so we can deep dive and tackle everything needed to get you up to speed. Our Screen Print Pro class maxes out at 6 people and these classes max out at 3.

multi-color
This Saturday class will take what you learned in the Screen Print Pro class (or if you already have some printing experience) and kick it up with multiple color prints. Limited to only 3 people per class with your own 2-color design, we will go over art & film, exposure, setup, registration (and micro-registration), overprinting to achieve even more color option and more.

light on dark
Printing lighter colors on dark fabric using waterbased ink is not as simple as laying the color down. Because the ink is driven down into the fabric we have to use a few different processes to get your light/dark designs to look perfect on your garment. In this workshop we will go over a few processes on a few different blends of shirts to teach you how to nail bright colors on dark shirts.

THINGS TO KNOW

how many items can we bring?

Bring in around 8-10 fabric based items unless otherwise stated. Lighter colors will work best. T-shirts, tote bags, pillowcases, tea towels, pullover hoodies, etc. No items such as thick towels, heavily textured materials or items with pockets and zippers, please. You can purchase blank T's from Michaels and AC Moore or bring items from home. You can also set up an account with online retailers like shirtspace.com. Don't be afraid to bring old shirts and items with printing on them as well. The results could be really cool!

how many colors will we printing?

Unless it is specifically stated we will be limiting things to a one-color print. You will need to pick the same ink color for all the items you bring. Bring all white or light colored fabrics for the best results and ink color selection. Though sometimes you get those unexpected pops of "wow!" when you try darker T's. Our Screen Print Multi-Color class is a 2 color printing class.

how should we format and send our art to you?

For Screen Print Starter you will be using studio art. For all other classes you can supply your own designs. We need hi-res artwork for you to get the best results. Adobe Illustrator is best. Vector artwork will scale as needed and create the sharpest film for your print. Once you have completed your artwork you need to color the entire artwork black with each of the 4 CMYK sliders pushed to 100%. Send the .Ai or .EPS file along. We are on the latest version of Adobe Creative Cloud. Photoshop files need to be hi-res and 300dpi.

Email your file by Thursday the week of your workshop. For vector artwork, send us a .ai or .eps file, and if bitmap a jpeg or pdf -300dpi and sized to how large you think you want it to print, no larger than 12"x14" (10" across is a good size) Please also bring it with you on a USB drive as a backup. Remember to outline any fonts and expand any strokes in Illustrator.

For those that do not send in art, we have some ready-to-go designs and all sorts of films that you can collage into your own unique piece. Please DO NOT take images free from the internet to bring in and print. Purchase any stock art and know that while you can print it you most likely cannot sell it so know that any art you may buy would best be used for your own use/gifting to others.

what should I wear?

Screen printing can be a bit messy and we have aprons for you to wear, so dress comfortably and in some older clothes that you are willing to get inky.

Do You Offer Other Workshops In Addition to Screen Printing?

At the moment, yes. But I will be introducing some design-based offerings in the bear future. They may be paired with screen printing such a design and print a poster or seasonal such as design and print your own christmas card. Be the first to know by signing up on my mailing list down there in the footer!
